When God is at work, we don’t always immediately see it.
It’s easy to miss these divine clues or to dismiss them as interesting, but mostly irrelevant.
In a recent conversation with a VMC pastor, there was this noticing of something that made us pause.
I was talking to Reg Lewicki, lead pastor at Lincoln Road Chapel in Waterloo, ON, and he couldn’t hide his surprise at the enthusiastic response to the latest mid-week adult education class.
It’s a study on the book of Genesis.
So many people are interested and coming!
Someone asked if they could stream it.
Students are coming – asking for notes and extra resources.
People who are helping with the kids club that runs at the same time want it recorded so they don’t miss out.
Now, this is one of Reg’s favourite passages of Scriptures.
He loves this story of a loving and creative God who makes God’s home here on earth.
He loves this picture of God – making order out of chaos.
He loves how from the beginning God has been faithfully bringing about all that He has promised in the lives of His people.
And I’ve heard Reg speak – he’s a great communicator and a passionate follower of Jesus.
But that’s not really it.
As he told me this story – recognizing this unexpected and somewhat unusual response to a midweek Bible study – we were both wondering what God might be up to here.
This seems like something the Spirit might do.
I appreciated Reg’s open handed response – who knows what this might mean?
For now, he’s just going to prepare this week’s class and faithfully carry one with what’s in front of him, trusting that God will continue to draw people to Himself, and confident that God is quietly at work in some sort of way.
