Game of Chess – Nordegg Community Church

Nordegg Community Church is tucked away in a small Alberta town nestled within the foothills of the Rockies.
Dave and Crystie Tarr feel a little like Moses – no, not us, Lord!
And yet, it seems like God has put them in this place for this time.
So they are standing in that space and God is doing the work.

They describe church life as a game of chess.
Not sure what the next move is but believing that God is setting things up.
In a time when there is skepticism about church, Dave and Crystie are seeing church differently – not just an hour and a half on Sunday mornings.
Instead, it’s an everyday sort of thing.
So they are inviting people into community life and facilitating neighbourly relationships and good conversation.
They host gym nights at the Big Horn Reserve which is close by and the day I spoke to them, Crystie and Dace had just attended a walk at the Reserve for missing and murdered Indigenous women.
Crystie leads jam nights at the church for local musicians to gather around and play together.
They’ve partnered with the food bank and installed a food pantry outside the church so people can take what they need and give what they can.

Dave and Crystie don’t know what the future of Nordegg Community Church may be.
But for now, they’re paying attention to the doors that God is opening and being faithful in the opportunities to love God and love their neighbours
People are coming.
They’re interested in life together as a community of faith.
Who knows what’s ahead?
Let’s see what God might do.
