As Michael and Janice Bells (Orillia Community Church, ON) retire after over 35 years of pastoral ministry, they look back and can see how pastoral ministry has formed them spiritually.
In conversation with Michael, he recognizes that he’s had the chance to see God open doors.
He’s known God as the One who Provides.
God has been generous in terms of introducing him to a variety of diverse and interesting people – not just in the local church but around the world.
God has sustained him – he can honestly say that the joy of the Lord has been his strength.

Michael is grateful for the many opportunities over the years to listen to God “on the fly”.
During conversation with people, while studying Scripture, or as he practices quiet time with God while running or biking, he has learned how to be attentive to the Spirit.
Whether it’s a thought, observation, or question, he’s had experience recognizing when God might be saying something to him.

As Michael and Janice head into retirement, they are relishing in the blessing of friendship and church community.
God has been good.
They look forward to the next years – wondering what fresh things God might do in and through them.

So, Michael and Janice encourage young leaders not to neglect their personal relationship with the Lord or to see it separate from preaching and studying.
They encourage pastors to read Scripture for transformation, not for information.
And finally – learn to love your people.
This is the heart of pastoring – loving God and loving people.

VMC is grateful to God for men and women who have serve faithfully and diligently over many years.
To God be the glory, great things He is doing.
