The Gift of a Mentor

Once Desi started attending Charleswood Community Church in Winnipeg, he didn’t want to leave,

When a part time role came up for kids ministry, he stepped in.

Then when Faith Bible Camp was looking for an office manager, the people in charge of hiring worked together with Charleswood Community Church to make a full time role for Desi.

After a few years, Desi moved into a full time role at the church as Students Pastor in 2017.

Good mentorship has been one of God’s graces to Desi these past 10 years or so.

The pastor of the church, Gavin, saw some gifting and desire in him and he responded in practical, helpful ways.

When Desi approached Gavin about starting a worship service at Charleswood, Gavin leaned in and coffee and breakfast together became a regular habit.

Gavin checked in and helped Desi shape the worship services, offering suggestions and asking good questions.

Desi relied on his wisdom and admired the godly character he saw in Gavin.

When Gavin gave him healthy pushes towards more ministry, Desi stepped forward, knowing that he had a mentor alongside him who wanted him to use his gifts for the glory of God and to serve the local church.

For a young person in ministry, to have someone who’s got your back, isn’t afraid to challenge you, and wants you to grow in faith and spiritual maturity – that’s a gift.

Sometimes mentorship is as simple as coffee, good conversation, and opening some doors.
