In light of the discoveries of the unmarked graves of hundreds of indigenous children at the sites of residential schools across the country, some of the VMC leaders have been fasting and praying these last ten days leading up to Canada Day.
We are encouraging churches to consider practical steps of reconciliation in our various contexts.
The VMC Indigenous Ministries Affinity Group is recommending these steps:
- Listen and learn
- Lament, confess, and repent.
- Find a good first point of contact.
- Build relationships.
- Serve as invited by local indigenous leaders.
For a more comprehensive response, please reach out to VMC or to Ben Peltz directly.
From constructing a land acknowledgement for your congregation or
a list of suggested learning materials or
how to set a constructive tone for your public discourse,
there are people who can help.
Sometimes the Spirit comforts.
Sometimes the Spirit discomforts.
Both can give testimony to the work of God and the coming of His kingdom.
“If my people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
